In 2016, 5,053 lives were lost, and the numbers rose to 5,121 in 2017, 5,181 in 2018, 5,483 in 2019, and 5,574 in 2020. Tragically, 6,205 lives were lost in road accidents in 2021 alone. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for improved road safety measures and the adoption of advanced safety technologies in vehicles. In the first quarter of 2022, 1,834 people lost their lives in 3,345 road accidents, emphasizing the continued severity of the road safety challenge in Nigeria.

Furthermore, studies have indicated that ACC can help reduce the severity of accidents and enhance traffic flow, leading to a decrease in overall crash rates. By maintaining a safe following distance and adapting to the speed of surrounding traffic, ACC minimizes abrupt braking and acceleration, thereby preventing chain-reaction collisions and reducing traffic congestion. This positive impact on traffic flow not only improves commute times but also reduces the risk of accidents, making the roads safer for all motorists.

Experts predict that with the continued advancement and widespread adoption of these safety features, it is possible to achieve the ambitious goal of eliminating traffic fatalities entirely.
